Chapter 10

Celeste stepped out of the back looking much more like her vibrant self. "Why don't I show you where I work?"

Travis eyed the beaded curtain. Lisette arched that brow of hers in a clear challenge.

"Sure." Travis followed Celeste. The beaded curtain led to a short hallway. There was a door at the end marked Restroom. Another marked Storage. The third door was a neon green color. Travis had no doubt which door he would be entering.

Pushing open the neon green door, Celeste stepped inside. Travis paused in the doorway to look around. Colorful silks hung from the ceiling and draped the walls. A built-in bookcase took up the back wall and was filled with books, tarot cards, potions, dolls, crystals, and some things he couldn't identify.

Directly in the center of the room sat a round table that could easily seat six people. It too was draped in colorful fabrics. In its center was a large purple crystal ball.

He glanced at Celeste who shrugged. "It's part of the character." She motioned at one of the plain wooden chairs. "Have a seat."

She didn't wait for him to sit before settling herself into the one chair in the room that was different than the others. It had a tall back that towered over Celeste's petite frame. The carvings gave the chair an almost ominous feel without being outright spooky. The red satin cushions made him think of a royal throne.

"Since I sit here for hours on end, I need something a little more comfortable. I had one of those cushioned dining chairs like I have a home, but Lisette decided I needed something that gave me an air of authority. She found this thing at a flea market about six months after we opened. She had it refinished and the padding added. It looks like it would be horribly uncomfortable, but the opposite is true. In fact, it's the most comfortable piece of furniture I own."

Travis shook his head. "I can't imagine doing something like this."

"It beats waiting tables for twelve hours a day six days a week."

"I'd imagine it does." Travis looked her in the eye. "So, what did you want to talk to me about?"

Celeste laughed.

Travis let his eyes fall shut and took a moment to just enjoy the sound, allowing it to seep into his soul and clear away more of the anger that had taken up residence there.

"Nothing gets by you," Celeste said.

As her laughter faded, Travis opened his eyes.

"What happened with your brunch?"

He heard the concern in her voice and it touched him. While he didn't really want to think about Dan, he also realized hiding wasn't going to do anyone any good. Burying his head in the sand wasn't going to solve anything.

Before he knew it, he was spilling his guts. His anger rose with the retelling. By the time he reached the end, Travis felt like he'd run a marathon, or fought a battle. He was exhausted, mentally and physically.

"I don't want to be angry with him.
